Highlights of Syria

Syria is a country with modernization on the national agenda since Bashar al-Assad assumed the reins from his father. Syria, unfortunately, has gained a reputation of being populated by terrorists and religious zealots, when, in fact, Syria's people are some of the most hospitable in the region. It is absolutely safe to travel here and the country's modernization does not detract from its rich, ancient history. The city of Aleppo features a jumbled souq, or bazaar, fragrant with the scents of exotic spices, olive soap and roasting coffee. Get into the spirit and haggle with the locals...everyone does it! Both Aleppo and Damascus can claim the title of 'oldest continually inhabited city in the world. Damascus' old town remains a reminder of the romantic, with its bazaars, street-cart vendors, tiled courtyards, fountains, minarets, mosques and coffeehouses, but the New Damascus is a world of boutique hotels now residing in old Damascene addresses and gourmet restaurants that have refined the culinary offerings. Experience the best of both worlds in Damascus. One of Islam's most notable buildings is the Umayyad Mosque. A visit here is a must! And while so close, visit The Fountain, a coffee house sitting in the mosque's shadow. Each evening, around 7:00 PM, Abu Shady, the last of the hakawati, a professional story-teller, shares his craft by telling folk tales and fables. Yes, his performance is in Arabic, but you will be enthralled just the same.

Airports

Aleppo and Damascus house international airports under their namesake cities, while Latakia has the Bassel Al-Assad International Airport. You can also connect to flights for Kamishly and Palmyra. Deir ez-Zor Airport, located in a city of the same name, has recently experienced damage. Travelers here can expect close scrutiny due to its proximity to the Iraqi border.
